summary
The space race was good because it allowed for the soviets and Americans to compete at something without there militaries. in 1957 the Soviets launched the first unmanned satellite craft named Sputnik. It was only the size of a basketball and it only beeped. The thing people feared about the space race was the idea that atomic weapons could be delivered without a plane. After Sputnik it gave the soviets an upper hand and the Americans went crazy. many types on nuclear weapons delivery systems were now possible.
quotes
"An outer-space raspberry to a decade of American pretensions that the American way of life was a gilt-edged guarantee of our national superiority. We ourselves have made it an article of faith that the nation which builds the biggest bombs must be morally superior because it is materially superior. We need not be surprised today that Russia is making the same claim. We go on believing that our system can provide guns and butter. Yes, and Bibles too. But we query whether that means atom bombs and bimbes glacees; SAC by General LeMay, and sack dresses by Christian Dior; lower taxes and higher rockers--all this and heaven too." -- Clare Booth Luce
Subjunctive question
"If the soviets hadn't sent sputnik before the americans would the US have put a man on the moon as quickly?
