The idea of collective security includes a large group of states (ideally all that will join) and creating an alliance that will respond as a unit to breaches of peace. In theory, the system would prevent conflicts from rising as they did in the first world war- the aspirations and aggressions of individual nations spiralling into conflict that encompasses the globe. The league of nations would have, had it been properly executed, likely been able to crush threats and increase security for all. However, three vital nations were never to join it- the USA, Soviet Union and Germany. These three countries would be the most significant in the events of the decades to come. Without them, the league of nation's was rendered essentially useless.
