Industrialization/5 year plan
- designed to increase industry output
- based on quota system in factories
- forced economic planning
- command economy - sets target for production
1928-1933 first time, agriculture collectivized - focussed on heavy industry
- second 1933-1937
- too severe of quotas that were changed in 34
- party officials revolted against this and nominated successor to stalin
- stalin had candidate shot (beginning of great purges)
Summary
The 5 year plan would prove to be impossible and therefore ineffective. Russia was far too behind by European industry standard to achieve the goals that were set for factories.
"Russia must overtake the advanced capitalist countries in just ten years; or, I swear to you, those capitalist countries will destroy us."
-Stalin
-Stalin
What if Stalin had given factory owners and workers the freedom to choose what they believed would create the most successful output?
